Brain Development
We are currently looking into the concept of brain development and how it relates to teaching young children. We are reading the book The Whole Brain Child by Daniel J. Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson to go along with this concept. Below you will find what we are currently discussing each month relating to this topic.
June 2013During this meeting we announced that Ann Anzalone will be coming to speak to the BPLC and anyone else who would like to come on September 18th. We discussed chapter 2 from The Whole Brain Child. The group looked into Whole Brain Strategies. Member discussed how it is always good to stop and remember that other people feel differently than you. We talked about how we enjoy reading this book because it is very relatable, you feel like "you've been there". The book is also great because it talks about different age groups. The group felt that the following passage is really important especially in group settings "We're not saying that 'connect and redirect' will always do the trick. After all, there are times when a child is simply past the point of no return and the emotional waves just need to crash until the storm passes" The Whole Brain Child pg. 25.

May 2013This meeting we outlined our BPLC goals for this year:
• Inviting Ann Anzalone to be a guest speaker and opening the meeting up to all educators and parents. • Growing the member of the BPLC • Gathering information about the brain • Work on distributing helpful information we learn during our meetings to parents we work with • Work on creating tool kits for parents During this meeting we discussed the first chapter of The Whole Brain Child. We discussed how talking about difficult or scary situations that the children have been through with children can help them work through these emotionally charging memories. We also discussed how this can be difficult to do with young children or with children with limited communication skills. We reminded ourselves to calmly talk to children about difficult situations and to keep our strong emotions out of the discussion. |
April 2013This month we discussed the article "Understand Brain Development in Young Children" by Sean Brotherson. The group looked at how being an orphan especially in less developed countries can cause negative outcomes in regards to brain development and creating relationships. Some participants discussed how emotional intelligence is critical for life success and how it helps you better "read people" as you get older. Some in the group have heard that in other countries children are grouped together with a teacher for extended years ad how this can help children learn better by having these close relationships, we then discussed schools in Dayton that do similar things.
